Wood 8 - Steel connectors for glulam
Standardized but flexible building system for high rise timber buildings
"Wood 8" (Trä 8) system is a slender, material efficient building system for high rise timber buildings. The system targets the traditional post and beam market but replaces steel and concrete with glulam. The name Wood 8 is a permanent reminder that the system is wood-based and offers 8 m span width. The system also includes hybrid solutions where glulam is combined with both steel and concrete. Horizontal stabilization is achieved by use of trusses of glulam or elevator and staircase shaft in concrete. In some cases, steel trusses are used. Can be built very tall thanks to wood’s natural strength and form stability parallel to the grain. The level of detailing in a glulam structure is very high. Connections as well as installations needs extra attention in order to achieve the overall function of the building.

Benefits / Impacts
Steel connecors: Instead of welded pieces of metal the material is laser cut and formed out of one single piece without welding. This reduces waist and production time. The absence of welded joints provides for a non-brittle break mode. The brackets are parametrically designed and easily scalable. The Basajaun development project has led to a very cost-efficient solution for glulam structure assembly. Significantly reduced production cost and CO2 emissions. Improved fit and strength properties.
